I recently returned from semester studying in Barcelona, Spain. During my time away from the States, there were clearly some things that I missed from America— Deep dish pizza, driving a car, sports other than soccer, etc. But now that I’ve been home for two weeks, there are some things I honestly don’t know if I’ll be able to live without from Barcelona. The one thing that I’ll miss the most from the greatest city in the world is El Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria.

Located in one of the most happening areas of town, La Boqueria lay amidst the hustle and bustle of Las Ramblas (a grand boulevard lined with shops, gelato, and street performers). Historians say that there has been a market in that very location since the 13th century. Like a good wine, the Boqueria has only gotten better with age. It has continually topped lists as one of the best/most interesting markets in the world. With one step inside, you’ll understand why…
La Boqueria is the perfect glimpse into the Catalan lifestyle. One walk through the endless, yet somehow quaint, aisles of the market will allow you to learn more about the culture than any museum can show you. You will see the social, commercial, verbal and physical interaction among the Catalan people. And before you know it, they’ve sucked you in. Looked down at your watch to see what you thought was a fifteen-minute walk in the market has turned into an hour-long event. It is that easy to get lost in the crisp vegetables, vibrant fruits and juices, perfectly stacked eggs, living seafood, giant legs of ham, fresh nuts and delicious sweets.

¡Buen Provecho!
